Many homes have an attic, and there are a couple of different ways in which they are accessed. The most common, is just having a stair that leads up there, but in some homes, space was saved by installing a pull down ladder for attic access. While most of us don’t spend a lot of time in the attic, we will usually have a load of some sort when we go up there. This is why it is important that your pull down ladder is installed properly. If the ladder is to long, you will create unnecessary pressure on it when climbing the ladder. If the ladder isn’t mounted well in the opening, you run the risk of having it disconnect and come falling down. The hinges on the ladder should also be sturdy, since they have to take quite a bit of weight.

When moving things into or out of the attic, it might be better to have someone hand you the items to minimize the risks involved.

Some people love to have plants in their home, while others don’t want to deal with the headache. Do you know though, that plants aren’t just making your home look nice, they can also have a beneficial effect on the air quality in your home?

Many things in your home give off airborne chemicals that end up in the air you breathe. While not harmful in small doses, they can affect your health. Plants in your home can actually filter out these chemicals and thus improve your air quality.

You do need to be careful so that you don’t inadvertently introduce new chemicals to the air while caring for your plants. You should not use chemical fertilizer on the plants. You should also consider the amount of moisture that the plants might be adding to the air. This could be a concern if it condensates and causes water damage. The same is the case if you were to overwater your plants. Keeping the plants on an oversized tray can minimize the risk of water leaking and causing damage.

Some odors in a home can be particularly hard to eliminate. One of the worst offenders is tobacco smoke. The reason for this is that smoke particles are extremely small, so they can permeate everything. For example, if you live in an apartment, you might even find that, although you do not smoke yourself, the smoke from a neighboring apartment permeates your home as well. So, if you have just purchased a property that previously had smokers, what are some ways you can begin to get rid of such a stubborn odor?

Let’s look at some preliminary steps you can take:

As soon as you are able to access your new home, get as much air moving as possible by opening all windows and doors. Good ventilation is an important first step.

If you are someone who would prefer to get rid of odors as naturally as possible, you can use a number of methods to either absorb or neutralize them. Here are a few suggestions:

Vinegar is very good for neutralizing strong odors, although its own strong odor puts some people off from using it. Baking soda is another very good odor neutralizer but be cautious when using it around soft furnishings etc.

Citrus peel can also be used. Try placing around the house for a few days, an added bonus to this is that citrus has a very nice fresh scent to it.

Coffee also works very well at neutralizing odors. Try putting some coffee grounds in filters and leaving them in different areas around the house.

You can also use charcoal for stubborn smells. As you would with the coffee grounds, place some charcoal in bowls and leave in various rooms of the home.

Although these may seem like rather simple suggestions, they will go a long way to helping freshen up your new home.

If you live in an area that sees high levels of moisture, then you might well have moss on your roof. Moss will also grow on parts of a roof that are shaded by trees or that don’t see a lot of sunlight. A question you might have, though, is does this moss cause damage? Is it always best to remove it?

There are certain factors to consider when it comes to whether moss should be removed or not. For example, look at where it is growing. Is it growing in or around gutters and downspouts? If it is, this might be a cause for concern as it can prevent proper drainage which, if left untreated, could be the cause of all sorts of structural problems. So, in this case, it would be a good idea to remove it.

Something else to consider is the kind of materials that the roof is constructed with. If moss is growing on shingles that are made from clay or stone, its unlikely that moss will cause any damage. This being said, moss does contain a lot of moisture, so it would still be advantageous to get the roof checked to make sure that there is no rotting of the roofs structure.

It is good to take these factors into consideration with regard to moss growth because the removal of it, depending on how it’s done, could also cause you problems. Why not have your roof inspected first, to see if the moss on your roof gives you any reason for concern.

Why is radon testing so important before you buy and house and before you sell your house? Well, to answer that, we need to know what radon is and what effect it can you and your family. These things will be discussed in the topic for today.

So you think you have a leaky roof – and your floor says it all. Wet spots are appearing on the floor, so you decide to take a look on your roof to see if it really is leaking… But what are you going to be looking for? Well that is what is going to be discussed in this article.

The first thing you’d want to look for are potential shingles that are either coming off your roof from wind damage, rain damage, or just general storm damage. This shingles might be easy to pull off, look damaged, or are just not attached to your roof securely. Look for any holes in your roof, and by holes we mean spots where shingles may not cover. They don’t even have to be giant holes, they can start as little tiny holes, then over time, rot your rafters, which would then develop into bigger holes in your roof.

You also want to check your gutter system. Pine needles, grass, branches, and water, when frozen, can expand your system and then cause damage too, not only your gutters, but also to your roof. You can clear all of this debris either by hand, or by using a water hose and spraying every thing out. Regular maintenance on your roof and gutter system will help prevent long term problems for you and your roof.

Do you have a house with trees around it? Of course, most of the United State’s population have trees all around them, so when heavy storms come rolling through, what could happen? Unfortunately, trees have the potential to fall on family’s homes, and it happens a lot more then people think it does. How can you keep the risk of a tree falling down on your house to a minimum? Here’s a few tips for you.

Number 1: Make sure that all of your trees around your house are trimmed neatly, none of the branches are right up against the house, and that no tree roots are beginning to grow beside your foundation. When this happens, the roots can’t grow right into the foundation, but the roots can grow into cracks into the foundation and spread them apart. To keep this from happening in the first place, make sure that trees are far enough away from your house where if the tree roots grew, they have plenty of room to do so.

Number 2: You will also want to take down any trees that are currently within a 30 foot space around the house. Any number of trees can fall on your house during a storm, but if you pull them back far enough away from the house, your defensible space around the house will be perfect. If you do have to cut down trees that are right next to your house, make sure that an accredited professional handle this. If you were to do it by yourself, then you will cause more problems than there were before. By keeping track of these two helpful tips, you will continue to have a happy and safe environment for your family to grow in.

Bed bugs are truly one’s worst nightmare. They’re tiny, flightless, almost invisible to the naked eye, and such on the blood of humans and warm-blooded animals. If your home is infested, how can you get rid of them?

Well, knowledge is power. So you know for a fact that bed bugs are flightless and almost invisible to your eye because of their size. With this in mind, the best thing that you can do is call a professional exterminator. If you try and exterminate the bed bugs on your own, you may end up spreading the infestation even further. However, what you can do is that looking at all of your possessions to see if bed bugs infest them. They can hide in books, bed boards, mattresses, bed skirts, etc. If you do find evidence of bed bugs, you may have to throw out the possessions that are infected with the bugs, unless you want to keep your valuables in vacuum sealed packages for a couple months, waiting for the bugs to die.

In order to confirm that you do have bed bugs, here are a few suggestions. Using duct tape, put a piece at the bottom of all your furniture legs with the sticky part sticking out. With this, the bugs will be trapped against the tape, and you will have your proof. If you have a bed skirt for your bed, make sure that it doesn’t reach the floor. If you happen across bed bugs lined on the inside of the skirt, there’s more proof.

With these things in mind, unfortunately, all you can do is discover evidence of bedbugs, then call a professional who knows what they are doing in order to exterminate the infestation.
